Air Travel

As more travelers are looking to take their animal companions along for the trip, more hotels are trying to accommodate man’s best friend. New Zealand has several pet-friendly cities, and Christchurch is one of them.

Once you’ve decided to take your furry friend with you to New Zealand, searched for cheap flights to Christchurch, and started looking for a place to stay, you have some good, but somewhat limited options in Christchurch. There are nine pet-friendly hotels in and around the city, each offering varying degrees of comfort for you and your pets.

Naturally, you won’t want your pet to be limited to the hotel room all day, and luckily the nice weather in Christchurch also means there are plenty of restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating. This way you can spend the day with your pet and he can take in the views as well.

The Bunny Lodge in Christchurch is worth mentioning because it is the city’s largest animal holiday resort. Though it offers accommodations solely for pets (including cats, dogs and birds), it also has a daycare service that may be beneficial even if you are staying in a pet-friendly hotel elsewhere. This way, you can take day trips or visit museums and be sure your pets are in capable, caring hands. The lodge also offers grooming services, a swimming pool, obstacle course, and training classes for both you and your pup.

New Zealand is known for his scenic landscapes and vast greenery, and appropriately there are parks and reserves around Christchurch and other cities that are welcoming to dogs. Bottle Lake Forest Park is large and has walking trails, beach access, and spaces for your dog to run around in.Sumner and North Beaches are also pet-friendly. If you’re looking for something a bit more challenging for your dog, Groynes Dog Park has a large obstacle and agility course to keep him busy, as does Horseshoe Lake Reserve Dog Park.

Before traveling anywhere with your pet, be sure to research the vaccinations needed for them to visit any given country. If you don’t take the proper steps to ensure that your pet is ready to travel according to the country’s standards, and if you don’t have the proper verification, your dog or cat may need to stay in quarantine at the airport. Islands such as New Zealand and Australia do however have quarantine periods regardless of how your pet looks, but if you arrive early and pay for expedited service your wait time will be shortened. Traveling with pets takes a bit more planning, and you’ll need to book flights and hotels well in advance to give yourself enough time to visit the vet and get the necessary vaccinations and crates. The experience of traveling with your pets can be rewarding, but will take a little more organization on the part of the owner.
